A Message from Mandy...
Following the recent celebration of Indulgence Beauty Spa’s 12th year in Rhos-on-Sea, I thought it would be pertinent to introduce all of you to each of the members of my team. Some of you may have only got to know one or two of our therapists during your time visiting the Spa, others of you may have met all of us at some point. Therefore, I thought it would be good for each of the girls to provide a little more insight in to their favourite treatments, seasonal beauty tips, together with their hobbies outside of helping you to Indulge.
I’ve been working in the beauty industry for over thirty years (oh my goodness, how old am I!??) I guess that makes me a senior therapist here at Indulgence – scary!! I joined Indulgence in its infancy when it was just six weeks old. Prior to this, after I qualified from College, I went to work abroad in Hong Kong in a brand new five star hotel where I made a lot of good friends who made it really easy for me and all spoke in English!! On my return, I worked in a big hotel in Llandudno, then left there to work in a salon in Colwyn Bay for ten years. I am now approaching my fourteenth year working here at Indulgence and its’ own 14th Birthday. I really do love my job (sorry if that sounds corny!), but I do, and love making people feel more confident in their skin and how they look to the outside World. My top beauty tip of all time would be to drink lots of water. It is my absolute must and favourite drink (bar a Bacardi and coke!). It is the first thing I drink when I wake up in the morning and last thing I drink before I go to bed. Pure still water (with nothing added) as I believe this is the best. I adore carrying out the Decleor Orexcellence Facial which includes the fabulous facial workout for the skin – PILATES. The new products that accompany this facial are sumptuous and smell absolutely divine. Everyone that wants to give anti-ageing a hand, then this facial is a must. In recent years I have had the privilege of undertaking some training with Fiona Brackenbury, who was the Training Director at Decleor. This enabled me to become an Ambassador for Decleor at Indulgence. One of my favourite treatments to have done would be a back & shoulder massage – BLISS!! I suffer with lower back pain as my posture isn’t the best. Also, my shoulders carry a lot of tension, probably due to my job de-stressing my clients!! My personal favourite product which I am never without is Decleor Harmonie Calm cream. I have sensitive skin and this is my top of the range product that calms my skin instantly. If I’ve been out walking on a cold or windy day my face always reacts, so as soon as I get in I apply this cream quite liberally almost like a mask to help to make it feel comfortable again. My seasonal year-round tip would be to apply SPF to protect the skin from the Sun at all times. Out of work my passion is football. I adore the game and still get a kick (excuse the pun!!) of going away to watch a live game. Manchester City rule!!
I am very passionate about beauty as I love to make other people look, but most importantly feel good. I have also had an interest in beauty since I was younger, having tried a different path at University, but realised soon after that beauty was the only thing I wanted to do. The last couple of years I have worked in a local salon with different treatments such as eyelash extensions, gel nails etc, but decided to take a different route with the spa side. I have had a short experience in a local Spa and I loved it, which makes me very excited to go back into the more holistic side! Outside of work I like to keep fit and healthy by going for walks and going to a local gym. I try to only drink water throughout the week to keep my skin nice and clear (we have to take our own advice!) which by going to the gym really helps. I am really excited to join Indulgence’s incredible team and get started x
I have been doing beauty now for over a decade!! (Wow! I can’t believe that). For me, beauty is holistic, I really do believe that things are connected, i.e. – A stressful period in our lives, such as bereavement or redundancy, or even a global pandemic, can manifest into physical signs like tension, breakouts, etc. Having said that, the way the beauty industry is making new advances with technologies all the time, such as LED and Laser, it never fails to amaze me. I can only imagine where we will be in twenty years time. So, I always try to have this outlook at the forefront when with clients. I definitely feel through my training in this area, that this has made me stop and look at how I spend my own time. Which brings me to my passions. Anybody that knows me knows I am mad about my poochies, they are my “fuildren” (furr children). Anything to do with nature, if it’s got a tail, flies or is green I’m all over it. So, beauty products have to be ethically and responsibly sourced for me, which I think more and more companies and consumers are now investing in these types of products. Steph’s top beauty tip… SPF, SPF, SPF… I cannot stress this enough people and no, it’s never too late to start. I have to say this would be my No.1 anti-ageing product. My other top tip would be EXFOLIATING. Exfoliating is great for so many reasons. When we exfoliate, we increase the blood flow to the area, which flushes the skin with fresh oxygen and nutrients. It removes dead skin cells, helps prevent blackhead, pimples and ingrowing hairs, helps reduce lines and dark spots. Thus, all resulting in a visible, finer more radiant skin. So, whether it’s grainy, enzymatic or professional exfoliating like resurfacers or peels, let’s get scrubbing girlies.
I joined Indulgence over six years ago now from a Secretarial background, and so was completely new to the Beauty industry. I studied for two years at Llandrillo College, their Private Secretarial Course, and from there worked in an Estate Agents for my first job, followed by PA to Director of Social Services at Prestatyn HQ. My favourite time of the year is Christmas! Christmas starts a lot earlier in our home than everybody else's. I absolutely adore this magical time of year even though my three girls are all grown up now, but we still go ‘all out’ to make this time of year as magical as possible, and my two eldest girls, who live away in the North East, love coming home to ‘Christmas Cottage’, as they call our home in Wales. My hobbies are making jewellery, crafting, knitting, cross-stitch, my greenhouse gardening and my biggest love… baking with my 18 year old. Since my time with Indulgence I have learned so much about the Beauty industry, its products and treatments, all of which I have been missing out on all of these years. My favourite treatment – I love the Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion Facial, it makes my skin feel so deeply cleansed and clean, I love it! I find it very difficult to completely switch off and relax and so am not too comfortable with massage. However, after sampling the facials at Indulgence, I discovered a whole new experience and a way of relaxing completely, not to mention the sense of well-being during the days following these versatile treatments. I would thoroughly recommend everybody samples an Indulgence facial at least once. My favourite product – Neroli Amara Night Balm. This is my desert island item and I cannot be without it. What an amazing product of Decleor’s, as are all the night balms. I look forward to removing my make-up at night, even when I am absolutely exhausted, as I savour the application of my night balm, from breathing in the calming scent before I apply, to waking up in the morning with satin soft skin and that lovely bright complexion. Did you know?... Neroli Night Balm is also a great SOS product for insect bites, ingrown hairs/burns and even for nourishing the tips of your hair? Awesome product. My Seasonal Beauty Tips: Winter: DO pamper your hands – wearing gloves is a simple way to protect your hands from cold temperatures and dry air which can trigger Eczema. Gloves can also help eliminate cracked/splitting cuticles and nails too, so I’m never without mine. DON’T take long, hot showers as hot water can strip the skin of its’ natural elements, contributing to dry skin. Instead, use lukewarm water for a shorter period of time. Autumn: DO protect your lips and continue to protect against the Sun’s ultraviolet rays, but also start moisturising now to prevent dry, cracked lips this Winter. DON’T forget the sunscreen for your face! Spring: DO know your skin type and change your moisturisers – this really works! DON’t skip on exfoliation. Spring is the time to step up the exfoliation routine. Summer: DO take care of your feet – wearing sandals all Summer long, (as I live permanently in fit flops), exposes your feet to harmful sun rays, so when you apply SPF to your face in the Summer, remember your tootsies too! Don’t skip your moisturiser in the Summer months – your skin may not look as dry because there is more humidity in the air and natural oil on the skin – moisturise well – I never miss a day now!
I am passionate about health and well-being, and love to help others to feel better and become more empowered. My interest in health and well-being goes way back to my childhood; I was always quite an active, sporty person and this carried on throughout my adult life. Living in Singapore and Indonesia introduced me to the oriental way at looking at health and the concept of prevention rather than waiting for disease to appear, and then dealing with it. Back in the UK, fast forward 10 years when I hit a problem with my right knee, meaning that I could no longer run and play hockey, so I began to look for an exercise regime that I could enjoy for the rest of my life, and so I discovered Tai Chi and Qigong, and my knees were very grateful. No-one was more surprised than I, when I became a Tai Chi teacher, some 11 years later, and now I have been teaching for 13 years! Through the connections I made through Tai Chi I came to learn about Reiki, Acupuncture and Tui Na deep tissue massage, and I went on to study them all, resulting in my becoming a practitioner in them, and now I look forward to bringing them to you at Indulgence. I am qualified in both Chinese and Japanese styles of acupuncture and have been to both China and Japan to further my training and experience. A little-known fact about acupuncture is that it is actually quite relaxing. In fact, all my treatments are relaxing as I like to focus on de-stressing the body so that it can rebalance and heal itself. I have been a qualified Acupuncturist for 9 years now, and am still amazed by the changes that I see it make in people; sometimes I combine Tui Na deep tissue massage with some acupuncture, depending on the problem being treated. I get satisfaction from seeing people relax during a treatment and get relief from their symptoms. When I am not working, I like to spend time on my interests which are dancing (most types from Ballroom & Latin to Swing Jive/Lindy Hop and Argentine Tango), enjoying the outdoors through walking and photography, swimming, Pilates, Tai Chi and Qigong, meditation/mindfulness and spending time with my grown-up family. Life is very full and I love to wander along the beach for some of my own down time too. I am very much looking forward to meeting you all soon.
